Thank you to everybody who shared their ideas about this problem with us. Gabs and Joana from St George's School in the UK sent in this solution:

530.9 km = 329.9 miles
540.1 km = 335.6 miles
654.4 km = 406.6 miles
655.2 km = 407.1 miles
681.3 km = 423.3 miles
851.6 km = 529.2 miles

Rome - Milan = 654.4 km
Geneva - Paris = 530.9 km
London - Edinburgh = 655.2 km
Milan - Paris = 851.6 km
Berlin - Amsterdam = 681.3 km
Monaco - Rome = 540.1 km

Iris, Hannah and Hayden from Fenstanton and Hilton School in England had the same solution for the first part of the problem, but they thought that the distances matched up with different cities:

851.6 km = 529.2 miles = London to Edinburgh

681.3 km = 423.3 miles = Milan to Paris

655.2 km = 407.1 miles = Berlin to Amersterdam

654.4 km = 406.6 miles = Monaco to Rome

540.1 km = 335.6 miles = Rome to Milan

530.9 km = 329.9 miles = Geneva to Paris

Shubhangee from Bucklers Mead Academy in England also had the same solution for the first challenge and a different solution for the second part. Shubhangee explained how they worked out which distances matched up with each other:

1 km = 5/8 of a mile

x km = 8/8 of a mile (1 mile)

1 mile = 1 x 1.6 = 1.6 km

423.3 miles = 423.3 x 1.6 = 677.28 km

529.2 miles = 529.2 x 1.6 = 846.72 km

335.6 miles = 335.6 x 1.6 = 536.96 km

407.1 miles = 407 x 1.6 = 651.36 km

329.9 miles = 329.9 x 1.6 = 527.84 km

406.6 miles = 406.6 x 1.6 = 650.56 km

The answers need to be rounded up to match the kilometers. 1 mile is also not exactly 1.6 km (it’s slightly more) so we need to round up the answers.

Rome to Milan = 530.9 km

Geneva to Paris = 540.6 km

London to Edinburgh = 654.4 km

Milan to Paris = 851.6 km

Berlin to Amsterdam = 655.2 km

Monaco to Rome = 681.3 km

Well done to all of you! I wonder if any of these children has found the correct distances between the cities? If anybody has any ideas about this, please email us.

The NRICH Project aims to enrich the mathematical experiences of all learners. To support this aim, members of the NRICH team work in a wide range of capacities, including providing professional development for teachers wishing to embed rich mathematical tasks into everyday classroom practice.

NRICH is part of the family of activities in the Millennium Mathematics Project.
